Mace Sundancer was born on Corellia, the only child of Owen and Jaina Sundancer. His father flew a freighter and from the age of twelve, Mace began accompanying his father on his freight runs. When Mace was 16 he and his father, along with their Sullustan and Rodian crewmates were making a run to Toprawa when Agent Kyle Katarn transmitted the plans for the Death Star to Princess Leia's Tantive IV. Whilst Darth Vader's star destroyer persued Leia's ship, a Nebulon-B class frigate pursued the Sundancer's Pride, as the Imperials mistaken believed the freighter had also recieved the plans. The two Sundancers flew to Ord Mantell to escape the Imperial ship and to repair damage taken escaping the warship. An encounter with a bounty hunter warned the Sundancers that the Imperials had issued warrents for their arrest, and they fled Ord Mantell, only to be attacked by TIE fighters. Owen was killed in the battle, but his dying words to Mace told him to escape to Yavin IV.

Mace didn't know that his father had contacts with the Rebel Alliance until a group of Y-Wings arrived to escort the freighter in. The Rebels set about aiding Mace in repairing the freighter until the Millennium Falcon arrived, carrying Leia, Luke Skywalker and the Death Star plans. With the news that the Death Star was on its way, Mace volenteered to take the place of Y-Wing pilot Gold 9 who was ill. Mace flew in the battle of Yavin, claiming two turbo laser turret kills and a TIE fighter, but damage to his port engine forced him to return to Yavin before Luke made his run down the Trench. After the evacuation of Yavin 4, Mace was asked to join the nascent Rogue Squadron as it was being formed by Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles. Mace agreed, flying with the unit through its ambush at Mos Eisley, the rendezvous at Barkesh, the search for the Nonah, the defection of General Madine at Corellia, the liberation of Gerrad V, the mission to the Jade Moon, the assault on Kile II, the raid on Sullust, the breaking of the blockade on Chandrila and the defeat of Moff Seerdon on Thyferra.

After the Battle of Hoth, Mace, now a Captain, was placed in command of his own squadron, Griffin Squadron, flying new B-wings. Mace flew his B-wing during the Battle of Endor, with his fighter being shot down on Endor. Mace temporarily rejoined Rogue Squadron on its mission to fight the Ssi-Ruuk at Bakura, before returning to Griffin squadron to fight in missions to liberate Coruscant. He was also part of the temporary Rogue Squadron created whilst the real Rogues were busy waging their war on Ysanne Isard and the Thyferrans. Returning to Griffin Squadron, Mace recieved a promotion to Colonel and led the unit through the campaign to defeat Warlord Zsinj and Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Mace was promoted to Commander shortly after and moved to command Siren Squadron, an E-wing unit during the battles against the Emperor Reborn. Fifteen years after the battle of Yavin, Mace was on a mission fighting a band of pirates, when he discovered he had Force powers.

Mace was on the planet Jatooine in a ground operation against a gang of pirates when he got into a fight and lost his blaster rifle, with a Rodian about to blow his head off, Mace desperately reached for his rifle and succeeded in pulling it to him with the Force. The move surprised the Rodian long enough for Mace to cut him down and flee.

Mace subsquently left the New Republic military and journeyed to Yavin 4 in his E-wing with his droid R7-N8, or Nate. Luke Skywalker told Mace he was strong in the Force, something Luke had been too unskilled to realise before, and together they discovered Mace's grandparents had been Jedi Knights who had left the order after falling in love. Mace's grandfather, Jacen Sundancer returned to the Jedi Order during the Clone Wars and subsquently died on Geonasis. Mace's mother had remained on Corellia in hiding with her son, Owen. Luke Skywalker trained Mace to be a Jedi, and Mace remained with the Jedi Order as a Knight until the coming of the Yuuzhan Vong. Mace has since returned to the New Republic Starfighter Command as a General, to aid in the fight against the Yuuzhan Vong.
